What a shot list actually decides
A shot list is a plan for coverage, not a description of the finished video.
Each line answers two questions: how close are we, and what happens. That is enough to generate or film against, and deliberately stops short of dictating cuts or timing — decisions better made once the material exists. The breakdown craft here is the same one the pipeline uses to turn a script into scenes, which is why the shots vary in distance rather than repeating one framing.
Getting more out of it
Four things that make the difference.
- Vary the distance. A sequence of identically-framed shots reads as flat however good each one is.
- Give every shot one action. Two things happening is two shots.
- Establish before you go close — a detail shot means little without the space around it.
- End on something that resolves: a look, a landing, a reveal.
From shot list to generated video
